As the Road to WrestleMania commenced with the start of January and the Royal Rumble PPV approaching, Smackdown's "Golden Couple" reigned supreme! World Heavyweight champ Carson Pain and new Women's champ Kelly Kelly were both successful in their title matches at last month's PPV, giving the popular duo lots of official gold to match their nickname. Carson beat rival Eric Executioner to win back the title he lost at Survivor Series, while Kelly Kelly upset Beth Phoenix to win the Women's belt. With the popularity of the "Golden Couple" soaring and upset over the narrow loss last month, Eric was in a foul mood all month as he demanded a title rematch at the next PPV! The "Narcissist" was determined to prove that Carson's win was a fluke, and prepared to reign as champ again.
The battle over the ECW Title turned bloody last month, as champ Joseph T. Lutte retained in a brutal Ladder match against Krizz Torture. But the "2 Cool" superstar felt that he could get the job done, and even wanted to up the stakes... by demanding they settle their differences in the Hell in a Cell! The "Fantastic Frenchman" agreed to the match, and the rivalry got more intense each week as the two tried to out-intimidate the other in the lead-up to their next violent encounter!
The Intercontinental Title scene turned into a game of "hot potato" over the last few weeks, with 3 men each holding the title at separate times. Gravedigger entered the TLC PPV as champ, but got beaten by his former tag partner Zach Wesley in an elimination match. The "Mohawked Maniac" enjoyed 2 weeks as champ, before Ace challenged him to a 1-on-1 title bout on an episode of Smackdown. The "Ultimate Superstar" shocked everyone by upsetting Wesley and winning the title! This left an odd 3-way battle over the belt, with Zach wanting a rematch and 'Digger never receiving his before the title change. GM Teddy Long had a fantastic idea... put all 3 men in the same ring, with the belt on the line, at Royal Rumble! Each man vowed to outlast the others to claim the gold, and the growing feud had fans wondering if the belt would change hands yet again!
The blue brand also got a big infusion of new and returning talent this month. In the women's division, the Bella Twins made their return to WWE and joined Smackdown! Nikki & Brie immediately made an impact and put the rest of the ladies on notice. In the tag team division, a mysterious Japanese duo known as Alpha & Omega made their debut. In their first encounter, they were insulted by the Tag Team Champions, the Bullet Boyz, who mocked their appearance and lack of English language skills. Craig & Tony offered a match, which the Japanese luchadors accepted. And in a shocking moment, the rookies beat the Tag Team champs in their first-ever match! Craig & Tony were shocked by the outcome, and attacked them out of anger the next week. Alpha & Omega sent a shockwave through the tag division - they were coming!
With the Royal Rumble approaching, several battle royals were held to prepare potential Rumble entrants for the famous 30-man war ahead!

Coming off an exciting Royal Rumble PPV, all eyes were on the Smackdown brand as the Road to WrestleMania continued! Eric Executioner, despite losing a World Heavyweight Title match earlier in the show, ended up as the Royal Rumble winner in the hard-fought main event! The "Narcissist" guaranteed himself another World Title shot, possibly against rival Carson Pain, in the main event of the next WrestleMania. Carson was still the reigning champ, and "The Original" vowed to overcome any challenges heading his way.
The next challenge was going to difficult, since it would be an Elimination Chamber match! Several qualifying matches were held over the next 4 weeks to give 5 spots to worthy challengers for Carson's title. In the first week, Eric Executioner beat Craig Bullet in a Cage match to put himself in the match. The Royal Rumble winner could make his victory redundant if he would be able to capture the title in the Chamber! The second week featured a 4-man battle royal for the next spot, and Travis Roarke outlasted Krizz Torture, Zach Wesley and Mack Wheeler to earn it. Two qualifying matches took place in Week 3: Mack Wheeler won a battle royal on Superstars, while Krizz defeated the "Mohawked Maniac" in a Cage match on Smackdown. Krizz was also the reigning ECW Champion, after upsetting Joseph T. Lutte at last month's PPV following a long 3-month rivalry. Wesley was furious over yet another loss, and blamed Krizz for his misfortunes. The "Maniac" challenged the "2 Cool" superstar to a First Blood match just days before the PPV, and Zach managed to make Krizz wear the crimson mask to claim the final spot!
Intercontinental champ Ace was able to end the string of multiple title changes in less than a month by retaining his title at Royal Rumble, but his feud with Gravedigger was far from over. But as their rivalry grew in intensity, another man found his way into the battle... Joseph T. Lutte! The "Fantastic Frenchman" lost his ECW Title at Royal Rumble, but won a few big matches early in the month to put himself in the title hunt. Ace and 'Digger were forced to deal with the European rookie, and his Foreign Power alliance with Billy Carter & Zach Wesley made them nervous. Would the Frenchman use outside forces to help him steal the title from the other rivals?
The Tag Team division had been dominated by the Bullet Boyz since October, but another duo climbed the rankings to put themselves in line for a title shot... Parker & Coop! The former Olympians managed to beat all other challengers, and naturally developed a feud with their polar opposites! Craig & Tony seemed concerned that their titles were at risk, and used any chance they could to weaken their foes before the PPV!

The Road to WrestleMania had been long and intense, but the stretch run had finally approached! World Heavyweight champ Carson Pain still reigned after outlasting 5 other competitors in the Elimination Chamber, which meant he had one more battle with Royal Rumble winner and rival Eric Executioner. Carson and Eric's feud had spanned almost the entire year, and had grown exponentially as the year progressed. They began as Intercontinental Title rivals, feuded over chances to one-up the other, and eventually the top Smackdown title belt. With Eric's Rumble win guaranteeing him a main-event title match, and Carson winning inside the Chamber, it set up a seemingly final war between them! Both men sensed the importance and significance of their upcoming match, and it make their rivalry take a major leap in intensity! Each week, they had an encounter either in the ring or backstage, and it led to many physical altercations! The insane build to the World Title match had fans giddy to see who would emerge as Smackdown's top guy!
Gravedigger scored a big win at Elimination Chamber last month, beating Ace and Joseph T. Lutte in a 3-way battle to win his 2nd Intercontinental Title. The "Graveyard Monster" was very proud of himself, but his reign was continually bothered by a determined "Fantastic Frenchman". The European rookie, along with his Foreign Power allies, attacked and taunted 'Digger throughout the month. Sensing an unfair advantage, GM Teddy Long decided to minimize the chance for interference... by putting the rivals in a Cage match! Lutte was furious, but maintained his focus on trying to upset the "Monster" at the biggest PPV of the year. 'Digger knew the rookie was a dangerous grappler, but felt that the steel-walled environment gave him the edge... because Joseph couldn't run!
In a stunning upset at Elimination Chamber, Parker & Coop put an end to the Bullet Boyz' nearly 5-month reign as Tag Team champs! The former Olympians captured their first Tag Team Titles, and the fan favorites had the crowds eating up every word and action they did. Craig & Tony would not back down, demanding a rematch at WrestleMania and trying to damper their rivals' mood every chance they could get!
A couple title scenes saw some major action before the year's biggest PPV, including a title change for the Cruiserweights! Rusty had been enjoying his 2nd Cruiserweight Title run, but Raw's Lee Money had other ideas. The night after Elimination Chamber, "Cash" got a title chance against the "2 Xtreme" superfan... and walked out with the title in his hands! Lee's big win gave him his 1st singles title, and Rusty was naturally furious over the loss. A rematch was made just days before WrestleMania, but Lee won again to retain. The other title in play belonged to Krizz Torture, Rusty's tag partner. Krizz fell just short of winning the World Title at last month's PPV, but he still held the ECW Title. His feud with Zach Wesley, which developed as both of them tried to qualify for spots in the Chamber match, led to an ECW Title match! Despite an impressive showing by the "Mohawked Maniac", Krizz was able to defeat him and retain his title a few days before WrestleMania!
The final development was the interpromotional rivalry between Raw's DMK and Smackdown's Ace. Both men qualified for the Money in the Bank Ladder match, and decided to prepare for the match by facing off against each other multiple times. The first match ended in a draw, and a backstage brawl was broken up by crew members. DMK finally scored a decisive victory on the final episode of Raw, which supposedly gave him momentum heading into the battle for the briefcase!
